If you suffer from arthritis, you may be a little reluctant to exercise, but studies have shown that a gentle exercise like yoga can significantly diminish the pain and stiffness often associated with this painful condition because Yoga is not just a series of asanas or physical poses; it also uses breathing exercises and meditation all of which combine to improve our physical and mental health.
With depression often being reported as a common side effect of arthritis, yoga is a natural way to improve physical strength, flexibility AND boost our mental wellbeing. A study published in the Journal of Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience found that eight weeks of intensive yoga significantly improved the physical and mental health of people with rheumatoid arthritis and reduced the severity of depression.
Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the two main types of arthritis: osteoarthritis is the other and you can find more information at the NHS website https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/arthritis/ . In both cases Yoga can help you to manage the condition.
With osteoarthritis, the physical practice of yoga helps to build strength in the affected joints and improve their flexibility which can help to manage flare ups. Yoga can also work alongside traditional physiotherapy to speed recovery after joint replacements.
With rheumatoid arthritis, it is recommended that yoga asanas should only be practised when the condition is stable. However, the use of breathing and meditation exercises can help to manage the symptoms of stress and chronic pain in a natural way.
